PhD Day 2026 Success: Boosting the Future of Research at the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering
Apr 24, 2026
On April 15th, the José A. Torroja Assembly Hall became the central hub for the research community of the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering. PhD Day 2026 concluded with great success, fulfilling its mission: to guide future PhD candidates and bridge the gap between young talent and the expertise of leading figures in engineering and innovation.
The event, opened by the Director of the School, Prof. Esther Real, and the Director of the Doctoral School, Prof. Cristina Canal, highlighted the essential role of the doctoral thesis as a driver for social and technical transformation. Throughout the morning, attendees received key information regarding doctoral programs from the Doctoral Studies Management and explored the specialized support services offered by the UPC Library.
One of the most inspiring moments of the day was the participation of Prof. Eugenio Oñate, 2024 National Research Award winner, and Dr. Cristian de Santos, CEO of SAALG Geomechanics. Both speakers shared their insights on knowledge transfer, proving that a PhD is a high-value platform in both the academic world and the deep-tech business sector.
A roundtable discussion featuring current researchers from the School provided real-world perspectives on the daily life of a PhD student, research challenges, and international mobility. The event concluded with a networking session that fostered the exchange of ideas across the fields of civil, environmental, and construction engineering.
To ensure this information reaches the entire School community, the following contents have been updated on the official event page:
